Design Furniture: everything can change… e.g. the Pick Chair

The astonishing creativity of Dror Benshetrit

Interior design is a many-faceted and articulated world, always in permanent evolution. But it’s by no means limited to creating furniture: through its invention of new shapes it remodels our very lifestyles.

Interior designers explore our living spaces, renew our everyday objects at home and at work, reinvent new colour schemes, new lighting designs, in order to facilitate our pleasure and efficiency in settings that are both comfortable and functional… but also original and innovative. The result? Design furniture!

One outstanding exponent of such creative concepts is Dror Benshetrit, a successful designer based in New York, who took his first steps in the world of design studying at the Eindhoven Design Academy in Holland.

From his studio in New York – a powerhouse of activity involving architects, planners, constructors, choreographers, historians, engineers and other creative professions – objects are generated which not only perform their desired functions but also create new, unexpected and astonishing experiences. Such as, for example, the Pick Chair, one of the creations that best expresses Dror’s mind-boggling creativity.

Pick Chair: a shape-changing seat

The Pick Chair is simultaneously stool, chair, side-table or panel to be hung on the wall as a work of art.

It can be transformed from a seat to a decoration and vice versa, offering seamless variations on its own form that undermine any desire for foreseeable and orderly identity.

Dror Benshetrit’s Pick Chair seems to suggest that the peak of beauty and functionality in design furniture lies in the possibility of permanent transformation.

A “bring back campaign” not only focused on an object’s multi-functionalism but also and above all on the vital dynamism of ideas.

Many of Dror’s creations involve movement and versatility, featuring furniture and objects to be turned upside down or one side, bent, turned inside-out, dismantled and recomposed at will.

Whether designing a vase, an expandable suitcase or an entire island off the coast of Turkey, all his work springs from his imaginary visions of the future, generated by a genuinely multi-disciplinary alchemy.
Taking his inspiration from art and geometry, physics and poetry, Dror brings to life design solutions, furnishings and living spaces which all represent vehicles for transformation, thus offering us not only practical variety and convenience, but also the joys of amazement in the face of exciting new experiences and emotions.
