Amazon Go

Amazon Go: how to do your supermarket shopping without paying

Amazon Go is a revolutionary shopping system that in a few years time will probably spread all over the world. Launched by the American e-commerce giant, it will allow us to do our shopping in shops where no money is used, and no one has to cue up at cash-desks or pull out their wallets. Does that sound impossible? It’s not: it’s the future knocking on our door.

If you’re already used to the comfort of shopping on Internet, receiving your purchases at home or at work, get ready to change! When Amazon Go arrives, we’ll return to shopping in the supermarket, but in an entirely new and rapid way.

Amazon, the biggest online shop in the world, will invite us to leave our homes and GO to supermarkets to do our shopping. But with a big difference: in the supermarket there’ll be no cash desks, so we won’t have to waste time queuing up to pay.

The consequences are revolutionary, as you can see if you look at the massively googled Amazon Go video… but you won’t be watching science fiction. The first Amazon Go supermarket already exists, opened last December in Seattle. For the moment it is open only to the American company’s own personnel. But if this test phase goes well, 200 zero-cash-desk supermarkets are planned to open in the USA.

Amazon go come funziona

Amazon Go: how does it work?

In just three parts, here’s how the new computerized super-store works:

  • as shoppers enter the Amazon Go shop, they are recognised by having the QR code of their Amazon Go app scanned
  • they help themselves to the products they want, while video cameras and shelf sensors record their purchases
  • they then pass through the Transition Area and leave the store “without paying”, although the cost of their purchases has been deducted from their Amazon account credit card.

Naturally, if before leaving the supermarket the shopper changes their mind and puts a product back on the shelf, Amazon automatically cancels the product from their bill. Easy, no?

Amazon Go’s Just Walk Out technology is explicit right from its name, as though telling us what to do: Just Walk Out. Walk out of your home, yes, but above all walk out calmly and easily from your supermarket, without having to queue at a cash desk, or to search through bags and wallets for loose change or cards, or to get involved in arguments over queue precedence or delays!

Based on systems involving machine learning, computer vision and Internet of things, Amazon Go currently covers simple basic consumption items: soft drinks, snacks, sandwiches, sweets and similar products are already entering the virtual trolleys of customers in the Seattle store. But the US company is considering at least three possible other kinds of points of sale:

  • the typical small local store, part domestic, part grocery, part takeaway, stocking food, drinks and ready-to-eat breakfasts, lunches and suppers. Also planned are Amazon Meal Kits: special kits with all the ingredients ready to prepare a chef-level meal for two,
  • and thirdly a takeaway ordering system similar to that provided by“McDrive“,
  • a major US discount chain.

In other words, various different product extensions are being planned, covering ever wider ranges of food, and the extension process will probably continue.

When will Amazon Go come to Italy? No certain information on this is currently available, but one thing is sure: Jeff Bezos  and his company are continuing to develop their “most advanced shopping technology” with great conviction.

So… Happy “Just grab and go” to one and all!
